Let’s Work Together to Move the Needle on STEM Education

March 5, 2019

Optimism continues to build for increased investment in public education in California, with leadership sounding from Governor Newsom, the State Legislature and State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond. The California STEM Network is working hard to make certain that the many regional STEM education networks throughout the state are part of this discussion, helping to guide and inform new policies with the wisdom and knowledge gained through years of research and on-the-ground work.

Soon after last November’s elections, the California STEM Network hosted a statewide meeting attended by nine of our eleven regional STEM networks. The outcome of that gathering was consensus around a shared policy agenda to pursue both for California and nationally. Priority areas include:

  • Expanded Community Outreach on the importance of STEM education and how to achieve it;

  • Early STEM Learning—for students, families, and educators

  • Teacher Training, Professional Development, Recruitment and Retention to remedy the increasing shortfall of qualified  teachers of STEM subjects at all grade levels

  • Strengthening connections between high school and college, in both two-year and four-year programs to boost student success, particularly in STEM disciplines.

Legislators have already introduced numerous bills that address public education and other urgent needs of the state and the Governor has made several new appointments to key education policy positions, including naming Linda Darling Hammond as his pick for president of the State Board of Education. The California STEM Network is tracking  the legislation, sitting down with policy makers and their staff to share our priorities and expertise, and strategizing with our partners and stakeholders throughout the state.
