Preparing the STEM Talent Pool During A Pandemic
The Institute for STEM Education hosted its second virtual Coaching & Selection Workshop series as part of the Career Awareness and Preparation (CAP) Program. CSU East Bay students participated in a two-hour workshop to develop their resumes and cover letters, as well as received guidance on how to interview. Following the workshop, students participated in peer-review sessions to practice their interviewing skills and offer feedback on the resumes and cover letters of other students.
The program culminated during Forever Pioneer Week, with students having the opportunity to participate in mock interviews and feedback sessions with panels of two to three professionals. Thank you to all of the professionals who participated and helped to support our Pioneers!
73 professionals volunteered their time, which equated to approximately 103 hours. Many also continued conversations after the guided panels, so the number of hours are actually much greater! 86% of the volunteers were Alumni - way to go Pioneer family! Our industry partners - Lawrence Berkeley National Labs, Amgen, and Amazon Web Services - were out in force to support Pioneers, making up 18% of our volunteer numbers! The incredible range of academic backgrounds was on full display during the week, with more than 15 fields represented - we had professionals with backgrounds in Biology, Business, Human Development, Sociology, Statistics, Chemistry, Education, Mathematics, Human Resources, Computer Science, Physics, History, Psychology, Economics, Studio Art, and Public Administration. 3 students have since scheduled employment interviews and ALL students have shared that they feel more confident and competent as they look towards the job market.
Students were then asked to share some of the advice they received or experiences they had during the workshop that helped reshape their way of thinking in our post-panel debrief:
"I definitely feel more confident for interviews with the practice I got in the mock interviews. e.g. I had a phone screen last Wednesday and I felt very comfortable talking about my background and experience." "I do not have the connections to get insights on the interview process and this was an amazing opportunity to get feedback on my answers to interview questions." "I really enjoyed this whole process. I was a bit nervous going to the interviews but the interviewers put me at ease."
