Cal State East Bay Secures Scholarship Funding for Teachers in Training

Priority: K-12 Teacher Recruitment and Retention

The East Bay STEM Network has placed a priority on remedying the shortage of qualified math and science teachers—which has doubled since 2010. Recently, the Cal State East Bay campus has generated two sources that will help a diverse pool of future teachers earn their teaching credentials:

  • Cal State East Bay is partnering with the Oakland Unified School District and Trellis Education on a teacher residency program that brings experienced mentor teachers to provide individualized support and invaluable professional lessons for students completing their teaching credential and through their first five years teaching in Oakland classrooms.

  • The National Science Foundation has awarded Cal State East Bay more than $1 million over five years through the Robert Noyce Teacher Scholarship Program (award no. 1852961) for the “Supporting Excellence, Effectiveness, and Diversity in STEM Teacher Education” proposal. The Noyce program provides scholarships of $14,000 annually to assist students preparing for careers in STEM education in grades 6-12.
