EAST BAY STEM NETWORK: Early Math Education Update

The East Bay STEM Network's campaign to raise public awareness about the importance of early math education was given a boost at the East Bay Economic Development Alliance's 2019 Innovation Awards celebration on March 28 at the Fox Theater in Oakland. Each of the 400+ attendees received a copy of the Institute's "Math Starts Early" family engagement booklet (now available in English and Spanish). Dr. Leroy Morishita, President of Cal State East Bay, authored an article in the San Francisco Business Times entitled "Early Math Education: Key to Our Innovation Economy", with a call for investment in math education starting in preschool as "essential for the Bay Area's workforce." 2019 MESA Day

Cal State East Bay was the center of fierce competition on Saturday, March 23, as more than 300 local middle and high school students vied for victory at the 2019 MESA (Mathematics, Engineering, Science Achievement) STEM competition preliminaries. Teams of students engaged in a daylong science competition with challenges that included designing gliders that could navigate a right turn, and building prosthetic arms capable of picking up a cup. The 53 victors advanced to the Northern California Regionals, hosted by Google on April 13, with the winners there--from Fremont's Kennedy High--going on to the state MESA Championships at UCLA on May 4.
