Family Engagement Pilot is Making Math Fun

The pilot program begun in the fall at Helen Turner Preschool in Hayward has brought math confidence and engagement to low-income families in Hayward, with monthly series of workshops led by the Institute thanks to a $1 million endowment from the Malavalli Family Foundation. The take-home booklet of family math activities that the Institute developed for this pilot has been distributed, along with training for educators, to Berkeley afterschool programs and staff at the Fremont Public Library. Lack of awareness of the rich array of STEM careers that could lie in their future is one obstacle that students in under-served communities confront. The Career Awareness and Preparation (CAP) program led by the Institute for STEM Education has grown over the years and now reaches Cal State East Bay students as well as high schoolers throughout Alameda and Contra Costa Counties. Thanks to the Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, Lawrence Livermore National Lab, and Aemtek Laboratories for hiring students from Cal State East Bay—the nation’s most diverse four-year campus—for paid internships this semester. The CAP program has prepared more than 100 Cal State undergraduates by honing professional

Let’s Work Together to Move the Needle on STEM Education

Optimism continues to build for increased investment in public education in California, with leadership sounding from Governor Newsom, the State Legislature and State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond. The California STEM Network is working hard to make certain that the many regional STEM education networks throughout the state are part of this discussion, helping to guide and inform new policies with the wisdom and knowledge gained through years of research and on-the-ground work. Soon after last November’s elections, the California STEM Network hosted a statewide meeting attended by nine of our eleven regional STEM networks. The outcome of that gathering was consensus arou
